Six Shooter #197
Six Shooter trail in the Pinal Mountains is one of the must do trails in Arizona. At 6.1 miles and 3400' of elevation gain its a moderately difficult hike or bike ride ascending. Whether you start from the top or bottom you'll be greeted with amazing views from several different biomes that make up the Pinal Mountains.
The trail is well established and easy to follow. Ascending from the base starts you off in the high desert and slowly climbs up Six Shooter Canyon quickly proceeding up a pinon and juniper filled canyon. The further you ascend you'll be greeted by a denser canopy of trees and the sight lines open up really showing off the beauty of the canyon. Eventually you will reach a saddle just over half way up which is a good place for lunch or an extended break to take in the vast views of Globe from above.
From there it is a casual hike or ride with a few brief steep sections that are short lived. The top of the trail makes you feel much further from the desert than you truly are. This Arizona staple is one that everyone should find the opportunity to explore and enjoy. Whether you're hiking and/or taking in the scenery and wildlife or mountain biking, Six Shooter has something for everyone.
Six Shooter has been a mountain bike favorite for Gravity Riders for many decades for it long sustained gravity driven ride, expansive views and lush forest. The Tonto Gravity Riders are honored to be the Trail Stewarts for this National Recreational Trail. -TGR
